With approximately 450,000 victims per year, sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. The only effective immediate treatment for sudden cardiac arrest is an electric shock from an automated external defibrillator (AED), administered as soon as possible. Police and law enforcement officers are often the first responders in a cardiac emergency, arriving even before emergency medical personnel. Police and other law enforcement officers therefore play a vital role in the life-saving process. As first responders, law enforcement officers need to be adequately trained to provide life-saving treatment using a portable AED.
 
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, anytime—to people of all ages in all walks of life, including law enforcement officers. Therefore the life saved by an AED could even be that of a fellow officer—between the stress level and high-risk environment, law enforcement officers are among the highest-risk groups for sudden cardiac arrest. By equipping police vehicles with AEDs and incorporating them into the emergency response program when sudden cardiac arrest is suspected, the time between cardiac arrest and defibrillation can be significantly reduced.

Here are some of the reasons police departments and law enforcement agencies are investing in AEDs:
CPR alone saves just 9% of sudden cardiac arrest victims.
Although AEDs may be accessible to the community, bystanders may be reluctant or unaware of how to use them. Law enforcement officers are typically better equipped to provide emergency medical treatment than the general public.
