Gestational diabetes is diabetes that is only present during pregnancy. After birth, gestational diabetes goes away, but once you have had it, you have an increased risk for gestational diabetes in subsequent pregnancies and a 10-fold risk of developing type 2 diabetes. About 50% of women with gestational diabetes go on to develop type 2 diabetes. That doesn’t have to be your story. The Diabetes Prevention Program has been shown to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% and participation in the program may also decrease participants’ risk of developing gestational diabetes in future pregnancies. The program provides 12 months of guidance, support, and encouragement during your journey to better health. Weekly 1-hour meetings are held for the first 6 months to give the necessary support to develop healthy habits. The following six months are a maintenance period during which support is always available, but meetings are less frequent.
